Saint James Lutheran Cemetery
Columbus, Norwich Township,
Franklin County, Ohio
Gravestone Photographs
Saint James (aka Jacob) Lutheran Cemetery is located at 5660 Trabue Road (southeast corner of Hilliard-Rome Road & Renner/Trabue Road), Columbus. The earliest records date from 1848 as do the earliest stones. The cemetery is still in use and is exceptionally well cared for by the church.
German immigrants, coming to their new land, often brought little with them but their dreams of a better future and their faith in God. One of the first things they did on reaching their new homes was to come together in faith and build a place of worship. St. James became the spiritual home and final resting place for many early German pioneers of Norwich Township and their names are well remembered and well respected. Many of their descendants still live in the area. The early records were kept in German and the worship services conducted in German. Most of the more than two hundred gravestones are inscribed in that language. The two rows nearest the front of the cemetery stand in silent testimony of how difficult life was and how high the infant mortality rate was.
