Darby Township, Union County, Ohio

Mitchell (aka Robinson) Cemetery, Darby Township, Union County, OH

Gravestone Photographs

The Mitchell/Robinson Cemetery is the earliest in Union County having been used as a cemetery by the Indians before the white settlers arrived.  Many of the first settlers in this part of the county are buried here; among them are Samuel McCullough who died in 1800 and the first female white child born in Ohio.  The cemetery is located on the north side of Big Darby Creek on State Route 38 south of Marysville.  The west half of the cemetery is the old pioneer cemetery and on the east is the "new" portion which is still in use. There are several special monuments in the cemetery; among them is the cenotaph* of David (1681-1757) & Jean (McClellan) Mitchell (1706-1746), parents of the Mitchell pioneers buried here (See Mitchell).
Now complete except for a few re-takes.

    • Cenotaph*:  LEGEND, This David Mitchell, head of our line of Mitchells in America, born 1681 probably near Dromore County Down, N.E. Ireland settled in S.W. Lancaster County, PA, Drumore Twp about 1713 and was buried in the Morrison graveyard near Chestnut Level, PA, where W. G. Mitchell, my brother, and I personally found this tablet with other Mitchell graves. Because the graveyard was being rapidly obliterated, we brought the tablet with us in 1928. David Mitchell's will with other legal papers found in the records of Lancaster County, PA was "duly proven Nov 21, 1757." The children named in this will were: Samuel, Jean, Abraham, Margaret, Heleanor, Sarah, George and David. Samuel and his wife are buried under this monument. Erected in 1947 by J. F. Mitchell. On the other side of this stone: Samuel Sr. - Margaret, parents of Jane Kirkpatrick, Judge David Mitchell, Elizabeth McCullough-Taylor, Samuel Mitchell (rlm).
