Cheney Cemetery is located about .5 mile south of State Route 739 west of the tiny hamlet of Essex. The narrow dirt dirt road leading to the cemetery is on the east side of the house located at 13243 Rt. 739. The cemetery was in very poor condition with only a few stones standing when it was "read" by the members of the Union County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society in 1986. Since then a large granite monument has been erected listing the names of all those known to be buied here and most of the original stones have been repaired and re-erected. Weather and mowing equipment seems to have continued to damage the remaining original stones. And, as often happens some of the old stones have been swallowed up or carried away. A complete photographic inventory of all remaining stones was made on November 10, 2011.
The top portion of the following is a transcription of the names contained on the modern granite monument. Following that are the individual Gravestones.
NOTE: Names and dates that are underlined in black indicate the Webmaster's "best guess." Names and/or dates that are enclosed in brackets ( [ ] ) indicate information taken from an outside source; usually the published readings of the cemetery.
