Big Darby Cemetery, Canaan Township, Madison County, OH

Gravestone Photographs

Big Darby Cemetery is located behind Big Darby Baptist Church which was established about 1810 at a "T" created by the east end of Price-Hilliards Road (County Road 32) where it connects with Plain City-Georgesville Road (County Road 7).  The church and cemetery are just outside Franklin County on the rolling hills west of Big Darby creek, and the remains of many residents from nearby Brown and Wahington Townships (Franklin County) are buried here.  The two counties are divided down the middle of Big Darby Creek at this point.

The following comes from the W. H. Beers (pub.) 1883, History of Madison County, Ohio, chapter 10, page 788 (Online at http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Madison/MadisonCanaanH.htm):
About the year 1860 ground for a cemetery was purchased by the Trustees of the Township of Luther Lane. situated just in the rear of the Baptist Church, and. which was dedicated to use by the reception of the body of Thurza Reece the same year. They have fenced in and laid it off into lots, and fitted it up as a permanent ground for the use of the township. It has already received a large concourse of the dead. and has some fine monuments erected among which is a very large and fine monument erected to the memory of William D. Wilson. In 1882, a fine brick vault was erected and is in charge of a board of trustees who regulate its use. and who have placed it in charge of Malancthon Worthington.

This cemetery is still active and is extremely well cared for.  We found a few broken stones carefully propped against the north wall of the tool shed.  They seemed to be waiting to be repaired and replaced. Most recently Canaan Township paid $50,000 to have the cemetery completely refurbished, including the cleaning and repair of the old stones. One example of this work is the stone that was illegible in 2006. It is the stone of Private Jasper Powers. The recent photo was supplied by Tom Ward.

We will be photographing this cemetery completely; until it's completed if you have photos that you would like to contribute I will gladly use them, and add your name and email address (encoded so that it can't be "harvested" by SPAM robots).

Please contact Leona at to find out how to contribute your photos.
