Smith's Burying Ground (Pioneer Cemetery) (Burnside Cemetery), Plain Twp., Franklin County, OH

Gravestone Photographs

This small historic cemetery was established in Franklin County's earliest years.  Burnside Cemetery, was originally called Smith's Burying Ground and is also known as Pioneer Cemetery.  It is located on the west side of Route 62 (Johnstown Road) about a half mile north of Central College Road and is maintained by the Plain Township Trustees.  At least three veterans are buried in this cemetery--two served in the Revolutionary War and one in the War of 1812.  For a "thumbnail history" of this cemetery click here.  A complete photographic inventory was made May 2, 2004.  Some information came from, Franklin County, Ohio Cemeteries, Volume IV, Blendon & Plain Townships, part of an 11 volume set, compiled by The Franklin County Genealogical Society, a chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society (Columbus, 1981).

NOTE:  The cemetery is small enough that photographs appear in the order they were photographed, though it is obvious that many stones are not in their original location.
